Looking the Monster in the Face
The racist, alt-right march in Virginia is the monster under the bed that is finally crawling out from the darkness and showing itself in the day time. It’s horrific. It’s awful. We can’t imagine how “those people” can be so hateful, so awful. But here’s the catch: It is all of us. That’s right. These people are part of the human collective, whether you want them to be or not. And since we are ALL connected, we too are connected to that energy—that ugliness. It is part of us.
Just the idea of that is overwhelming to me. It freezes me in my tracks. I want to help, but how? How do I help heal this? Well, I reached out to Spirit in this week’s reading and asked. What do we do now? How do we heal this? What do we need to know about the racial violence that is happening everyday in this country, so that we can be better than this as a community? How do we move forward when something so ugly, so dark rears its ugly head and is staring you in the face? Spirit's answer: You don’t. You stop and you look it right in the eye and say, “I see you”. You acknowledge it. You see it for all that it is and then you realize that it is our responsibility as human beings to clean up this mess.
This week’s cards are: Clean It Up, Yang-Protection, Tick Tock Reversed.
Everyone has junk that we carry around. It’s when you actually acknowledge that you have junk, that the healing begins.
As a global community, we are desperately trying to heal and move into a more connected and loving space. We CANNOT do that if we do not acknowledge that we have junk. And people, we have a TON of junk to clear. (Clean It Up) That’s part of the reason that all of this is coming to the surface. Racism, violence and anger have been bubbling under the surface for as long as we have existed. If we truly want to evolve into a higher level of consciousness, we must see ourselves for what we are as a whole. Only then can we start the clean up process.
Think of it this way: if you want to clean your closet out, you wouldn’t close your eyes and randomly grab things to get rid of. No, you’d dig through it all piece by piece, thinking about it, really looking at each thing and deciding whether or not to keep it or toss it. In the middle of it all, it usual looks way worse before the closet looks better.
The same goes for healing and spiritual growth. It gets super messy before it gets better. How else can we see it? You can’t just shut your eyes and step in, hoping you’ll pick the right think to toss. No, you have to stop and you have to dig. You have to look at each thing and decide: Is this what defines me? Is this who am I? And then you have to toss out the stuff that isn’t you, anymore, so you can make way for new things.
The sooner you realize that you are part of the ugliness, the sooner you can get on your way to helping and healing. So give gratitude that all of this is coming to light and you don’t have to go searching for it. Spirit is showing us exactly what we need to start with, in a way that there is no denying it’s an issue. Pay attention. Listen. Learn. Or we will keep attracting experiences like this until we do.
What else do we need to know about this situation? Think before you act.(Yang) It’s easier to get fired up and lash out. That choice definitely burns bright, but burns out fast. If you truly want to learn this lesson, you need take a moment and really think about what would be the most helpful right now. Maybe for you it’s consistently donating money to a cause that is on the ground working day to day to heal this. Maybe you ARE the on the ground helping to fix this. Maybe it’s working within yourself and your family to call out racism when you hear it. Maybe it’s stepping in as an educator or a mentor or a volunteer in places that need it. The point is if you want a long lasting solution, you must think it through before you act. Weigh your decisions out and see what has the most potential for the greatest good. Don’t rush to make a choice in the heat of the moment.
What do we need to understand moving forward? What is the next right action? It’s never too late.(Tick Tock Reversed)This is such an important concept, people. It’s never to late to make a difference. It’s never to late to make a change. It’s never to late to help. We may feel guilty over what has transpired. That guilt may try to cripple us. It may try to overwhelm us. We have to let that go.
Spirit wants you to know that no matter what—it’s never to late to start again. Now, is the perfect time for new beginnings. Hold on to that, step up to the plate, and make a change.
My two cents: I woke up this weekend and honestly thought “the world is falling apart and there’s not a damn thing I can do about it.” And then I pulled my big girl pants up and decided that line of thinking wasn’t acceptable and was helping no one. So, I set my horrified and appalled reaction aside.
Then I moved on to:That’s awful! That’s horrible! Thank God I’m not like that! Except, that I am. I am part of the problem because the problem is real and it exists. And that makes me part of it. I live in a world that has allowed this to grow. I live in a world that has been in denial about how far along we on in our spiritual evolution and that has to stop.
I have to see it, to heal it. I live a comfortable enough life in far, far away Alaska that these experiences can feel so removed from where I am. It’s shocking because I’m not in it every day, day in and day out. But, there are people who are. THIS IS THEIR DAILY LIVES and that’s not ok. That’s so far from ok.
I don’t know how I am going to help, yet. I don’t know how I am going to be proactive about this, but I have asked Spirit to show me the way. I’m going to stay open and see what they send my direction and then I’m going to do it.
So be shocked. Be angry. Be sad. Be overwhelmed. BUT DON’T SHUT DOWN. I so urge you to not shut down. I urge you to see your part in this. I urge you to acknowledge that this is part of you. Ask Spirit what you can do to change this. And then stay open, stay curious and DO SOMETHING. Make the choice to change yourself and you will change your community.
